Nestled in the rugged Mahabharat Range of Lumbini Province, Arghakhanchi is a land where history meets natural grandeur. The district derives its name from the unification of Argha and Khanchi, two prominent principalities among the historic Chaubisi Rajya (24 kingdoms) that joined unified Nepal in 1786.
The capital, Sandhikharka, serves as a gateway to a geographically diverse landscape defined by the Siwalik Hills and the life-giving waters of the Banganga River. The region is a spiritual beacon, home to the highly revered Supa Deurali Temple, the historic Argha Bhagwati, the sacred Mathura Gopeshwor Pith, and Panini Tapovan—the legendary site where the sage Panini is said to have refined Sanskrit grammar.
With a vibrant population of Brahmins, Chhetris, and Magars, the district maintains a proud cultural identity and a literacy rate over 80%. While traditional agriculture remains its heartbeat, Arghakhanchi is emerging as a premier destination for those seeking scenic hiking trails and a glimpse into Nepal’s royal past at Arghakot Darbar.
